The New SL, due for presentation
in 2001, will be a typical SL: A pure two-seater with a long bonnet, a
narrower grille flanked by the newly designed headlights, a conventional
boot - and with a foldable hard-top similar to that of the SLK. Top of
the range will again be the SL 600 - with the new S-class' V12 engine developing
around 400 HP.
In the CLK Cabriolet, you can take full advantage of the sun the moment it comes out - at the touch of a button, the simple to operate soft-top folds in seconds. Equally, you can have a storm proof roof over your head just as quickly should the weather let you down. And when the hood is in place, the CLK Cabriolet is as snug and watertight as a conventional saloon.
The Roof: Takes a few steps to transform a weatherproof Cabriolet
into an open one. This is done by releasing the handle above the rear-view
mirror. Here onwards, the operation is automatic, the soft-top folding
electro-hydraulically. As you operate the soft-top switch, the side windows
and rear head restraints start descending.Behind you, a metal tonneau cover
opens up and the fabric roof disappears into its own compartment before
the 'lid' is closed again, blending harmoniously with the rear design.
The
weather resistant soft-top is available in black, blue or green. Between
the two layers is 20 mm of fibre fleece padding, designed to keep the heat
inside and the noise outside. It also prevents the hood from 'ballooning'
at speed. The finishing touch comes from the electrically heated safety
glass rear window.
The tonneau cover: While walking around the CLK, your attention
will be drawn to the unusual design of the rear end.
On top of the tonneau cover there are two 'airdomes', designed to underline
the stretched look of the car. They produce a
visual dynamic link between the rear head restraints and the car's
gently sloping rear end.
The wind deflector: Most convertible drivers want to enjoy every
ray of sunshine, but have to drive with the hood up if it's
too windy. Not in the CLK Cabriolet. You can specify a clever 'wind
deflector' which can quickly be slotted into place. It
reduces the buffeting in the cockpit and prevents your fresh air experience
from being too stormy.
